Errata, errata, wherefore art thou errata?

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

My Gigabyte mobo came with the TLB Erratum software fix in the BIOS enabled by default, and it’s been that way since I built the system. I decided to do a render test in Lightwave with the TLB Erratum disabled to see what the difference in speed was.

I was astounded with the results. The scene I tested rendered in 2H45m with the fix enabled. Disabled: 45m

So far I’ve not run into the erratum so I’m going to let the system chug along without it and see how it continues to perform.

Upgrading

I’m still in debate whether or not to continue with AMD. If I do I will get the Phenom 9850. I’ve got a mobo picked out, now it’s a matter of funds and making the decision.

lionsquare1.jpgI’m also looking at the Asus Lion Square for cooling. I’m not so much interested in the looks of it so much as performance and the fact that the fan is tucked away. This is one of the few name brand heatsink fans I’ve come across that specifically list the Phenom as a supported processor. So that’s kinda nice of them.

Jacksonville Maritime Museum

Began work on the Jacksonville Maritime Museum model. This little building is probably really easy to miss, but nonetheless is located in plain view.

This model is a low poly count, but it’s significance in any render I will produce will be low, so it’ll be okay.

Phenom 9850 Motherboard Compatibility Issues

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

Well it seems that my 770 motherboard will be unable to handle the 125W required by the Phenom 9850. I opted for a middle-of-the-road board and got dusted on the next generation. More information can be read here on Fudzilla.

What does that mean for my 3D system of doom? If I have to buy another motherboard to upgrade my CPU, then I will more than likely go Intel unless AMD would like to sponsor me with a chip. Then I’d just need the motherboard.  :)

The system is still running great. I’m just continually researching system upgrades.
